Valsartan Hctz contains two prescription medicine namely valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide. This drug is usually prescribed to lower high blood pressure in adults. It is especially prescribed when one medicine is used to lower your high blood pressure is not enough. The antihypertensive agent, including two pharmaceutical agents with complementary mode of action, may result in greater blood pressure reductions than single-agent compounds. The use of valsartan, an angiotensin receptor blocker and a thiazide diuretic represents a logical choice for combination therapy. An angiotensin receptor blocker works by inhibiting angiotensin II-mediated vasoconstriction and renal sodium retention. At the same time, a thiazide diuretic causes a reduction in intravascular volume and total body sodium. The dose of valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide provides a greater antihypertensive effect in combination with either agent alone. The blood pressure lowering effects of the combination drug also is greater than either monotherapy. The safety and efficacy of the combination drug are well established. The single-pill formulation improves treatment adherence and persistence. Reducing pill burden in patients with hypertension may improve the psychological well being of patients. Â
Taking the medication as per the doctor’s recommendation will help you get the best results and lower the risk of side effects. Speak to your doctor if you have any doubt related to the use of the medication. Most antihypertensive patients do not show signs of high blood pressure, and many of them feel quite normal.
Do not take Valsartan HCTZ if you are allergic to any of the medicine ingredients, including Valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide. The medicine should not be used in patients who make less urine due to kidney problems. Also, avoid the use of this combination therapy if you have/are:
- severe kidney disease
- gout
- unable to urinate
- treated with an artificial kidney
- severe liver disease
- more than three months pregnant
- diabetes or impaired kidney function, and you are treated with a blood pressure-lowering medicine containing aliskiren.
- the levels of potassium or sodium in your blood are lower than normal
If you are dealing with any of these conditions, do not take the drug and speak to your doctor. Â
Speak to your doctor before taking this antihypertensive agent; if you have low potassium levels in your blood, take medicines or supplements containing potassium. The use of combination therapy in children and adolescents below the age of 18 years is not recommended. Valsartan hctz 160/12.5 mg can be influenced if it is used along with other medicines. Let your doctor know if you are taking any other medicine. In some cases, it may be necessary to stop taking one of the medicines. This especially applies to medicines including lithium, potassium supplements, diuretics, corticosteroids, laxatives, salicylic acid, certain antibiotics, antiarrhythmic agents, antidiabetic agents, antidepressants, and antipsychotics. You should see your doctor immediately if you experience signs and symptoms of angioedema such as difficulty swallowing, hives, difficulty in breathing, swollen face, tongue or throat. If you get any side effects associated with the use of Valsartan hctz, speak to your doctor straight away.
