Valcivir 500 mg is a prescription medicine containing an antiviral agent-Valacyclovir, which lowers the ability of herpes viruses to multiply in your body. It effectively treats cold sores, shingles, and genital herpes outbreaks in adults with a normal immune system. Valacyclovir controls genital herpes outbreaks in adults infected with HIV with a greater CD4+ count. Use it with safe sex practices to lower the chances of spreading genital herpes to others. Avoid sexual contact with your partner when you have any symptoms or outbreak of genital herpes. Use a condom made of latex whenever you have sexual contact. In children, the antiviral drug is effective in treating cold sores and chickenpox. Valcivir tablets do not cure herpes infections such as cold sores, shingles, chickenpox, or genital herpes.
Take Valcivir 500 mg exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your dose and length of the treatment will depend on the type of herpes infection you have and any other medical issues. Do not stop the medication or change the treatment without speaking to your doctor. You can take it either before or after consuming food. If you have been prescribed Valcivir tablets to treat cold sores, shingles, or genital herpes, you should start taking medicine as soon as possible after your symptoms appear. The antiviral drug may not work for you if you start taking it too late. Do not take more than the prescribed amount. Call your doctor if you take too much of the medicine. Do not take Valcivir 500 mg if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. You must tell your doctor if you have kidney problems before taking the antiviral medication. Get immediate medical attention if you develop nervous system problems during the treatment. Common side effects of the Valcivir 500 mg include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, headache, and dizziness. Adverse reactions in HIV infected adults include headache, tiredness, and rash. Other less common side effects in adults include joint pain, low blood cells count, depression, painful periods in women.
