Tamtero 20 mg is a prescription medicine useful in treating adults:

     –    With estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.

     –    With early-stage estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer after surgery and radiation for breast cancer

     –    To lower the risk of developing breast cancer in the other breasts post-surgery and radiation for breast cancer

     –    To lower the risk of developing breast cancer in women with a high risk of getting breast cancer

     –    To treat infertility caused by a failure in the ovulation process in women.

Your healthcare provider will tell you how much Tamtero to take, when, and how long you should continue to take, depending on your medical condition. In general, the recommended daily dose is 20 mg. There is no additional benefit in taking more than 20 mg when being used for the treatment of breast cancer.

Treatment of infertility

The possibility of pregnancy must be excluded before initiating Tamtero 20 mg. The dose for infertility depends on your periods.

Females with regular periods

Tamtero 20 mg should be taken on your menstrual cycle's second, third, fourth, and fifth days. If you have failed to respond to initial treatment, further treatment may be given during subsequent periods, increasing the dose.

For reducing the risk of breast cancer, the suggested dose is 20 mg per day for five years. You will not benefit more from taking a higher dose or longer period of use.

Tamoxifen citrate 20 mg is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to this medicine or any of its ingredients in this formulation, including any non-medicinal ingredients. It should not be useful in treating women with hormone-responsive locally advanced breast cancer.

If you have a high risk of breast cancer and you need to take a blood thinner (warfarin) or have a history of blood clots in your veins and lungs.

It is still not known if Tamoxifen is safe and effective in children. If you are to undergo surgery, you may be advised to stop your treatment with Tamoxifen for a short period. Inform your healthcare professional if you are taking oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy. Other medicines that may interact with or be affected by Tamtero include:

     –    Paroxetine, fluoxetine used for the treatment of depression

     –    Bupropion as an aid to stop smoking

     –    Quinidine for the treatment of abnormal heart rhythms

     –    Medicines to thin the blood (warfarin)

     –    Rifampicin is an antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections.

     –    Cinacalcet to treat problems associated with the parathyroid gland

     –    Other medicines for the treatment of breast cancer, such as letrozole, anastrozole, and exemestane

Do not take Tamoxifen if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should not conceive while taking Tamoxifen and for nine months after you discontinue treatment. If you are taking Tamtero 20 mg, you should use non-hormonal contraception such as a condom, diaphragm, or coil.

Although unlikely, you may feel tired and lethargic while taking this medicine. If these symptoms are experienced, you must avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing any activity requiring complete attention.

The most common side effects of Tamtero 20 mg include mood changes, hot flashes, nausea, vaginal discharge, swelling (fluid retention) and vaginal bleeding.
