Susten is a soft capsule that comprises the natural female hormone, Progesterone, for oral use. It is a prescription treatment for women with premenstrual abnormalities or secondary amenorrhea and as hormonal replacement therapy in combination with estrogen in postmenopausal women with an intact uterus. Susten contains the active ingredient progesterone, a steroid hormone traditionally linked with female fertility and pregnancy.
The steroid hormone progesterone plays a crucial role in the reproductive events associated with pregnancy establishment and maintenance. Your doctor may prescribe Susten capsules for another purpose. Please ask your doctor if you have any queries about why this medicine has been prescribed. Â
Your doctor will tell you how many capsules you should take every day. For women using hormone replacement therapy in combination with estrogen with a contact uterus, the usual dose is 200 mg per day at bedtime on days 15 to 26 of your menstrual cycle. You will usually have a few days of withdrawal bleeding after this time. Â
For women with secondary amenorrhea, the treatment may be taken as a daily dose of 400 mg at bedtime for ten days. In menstrual irregularities due to ovulation disorders, treatment is given over ten days per menstrual cycle, usually from days 17 to 26 inclusive.Â
Susten is to be taken orally and swallowed with a glass of water. Avoid taking medicine with food as this may affect the way Progesterone works. Carefully follow all the directions provided by your doctor. The length of the treatment will differ depending on the condition it is being treated and the dose prescribed. Progesterone 200 and estrogen replacement therapy may be taken for up to twelve days in the last half of the cycle. The treatment may be continued for up to ten days in women with secondary amenorrhoea. Â
Susten should not be used in women with known hypersensitivity to its ingredients. It also contains peanut oil and should never be used by women allergic to peanuts. Women with undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding should not use gelatin capsules. It is contraindicated in women with a history of cancer, active deep vein thrombosis, stroke, pulmonary embolism, and myocardial infarction. Â
Also, do not take Susten capsules if any of the following applies to you:
 — Severe liver problems
 — Known missed abortions or ectopic pregnancy
 — Known or suspected cancer of the breast or genital tract
 — Unusual vaginal bleeding that your doctor has not determined
 — Bleeding on the brain
 — Blood clots, such as inflammation of a vein
 — Porphyria disorderÂ

Do not take medicine if you are pregnant or wish to become pregnant. If you get pregnant while receiving Progesterone, stop taking the medication immediately and tell your doctor. Also, avoid the use if you are breastfeeding. Do not give this to a child of any age. Â
Before initiating the treatment, you must tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, migraine, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, liver problems, kidney disease, skin sensitivity to light, and a history of depression.  Â
The most common side effects of Susten 200 mg include dizziness, depression, breast tenderness, abdominal bloating, joint pain, vaginal disorders, joint pain, hot flashes, and urinary continence. Side effects are more common during the first few weeks and usually begin to resolve as your body gets used to this medicine. Â
