Clindamycin phosphate, together with tretinoin as a gel, is a topical formulation approved for mild to moderate acne treatment in patients 12 years and older. The main indication of this combination drug is the management of moderate comedonal and mild to moderate papulopustular acne, the kind of acne which is more common in more than 50% of acne patients. Dermatologists may also prescribe Retino AC in combination with antiacne therapy such as nodulocystic acne. The topical formulation combines the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of clindamycin with the well-proven and beneficial anti-comedogenic effects of tretinoin. The addition of clindamycin to tretinoin enhances the effects of the active ingredient as a comedolytic agent to treat moderate to severe acne of the face. The combination of these two drugs accelerates the resolution of all types of acne lesions without affecting the safety of both compounds. The formulation is specially designed to enhance effectiveness and minimize irritation. Discontinuation due to adverse effects is less likely to happen. The once-daily use of Retino AC gel, its rapid dual action on the appearance of acne and good tolerability has a positive impact on the duration of the skin condition.
Use as directed by your dermatologist, follow all the instructions carefully given on your prescription—application and duration of the treatment based on your skin condition. First, wash your face with a mild cleanser. Prepare your skin with a hydrating toner to minimize the drying effects, as one of the major side effects of Retino AC gel. Now apply a pea-size amount all over your affected skin areas. The gel preparation has alcohol which makes the formulation to dry quickly and spread evenly when applied alone. You can also use a moisturizer to overcome skin peeling due to excessive dryness caused by tretinoin. Do not exfoliate much during the treatment. The gel can make your skin sensitive to the sun, so apply a good quality sunscreen to avoid hyperpigmentation and skin darkening.
Retino AC gel 0.025% is a prescription medicine and should be used under a dermatologist’s supervision. Inform your dermatologist if any unwanted effects noticed by the users. Patients with eczema should not use this gel preparation. Do not use open cuts, wounds, irritated, cracked, or sunburned skin. Ensure you apply the gel on clean and dry skin before and after applying the gel. Do not apply more than the prescribed amount. The excessive application may result in the peeling of the skin. The application of a thin film is enough to induce comedolytic effects and anti-inflammatory efficacy on mild to moderate acne. The safety of this combination treatment in pregnancy has not been established. The formulation is not recommended for kids less than 12 years old and individuals greater than 65. Avoid applying the gel around your eyes, nose, and lips. In case of accidental application, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.
Use of Retino AC Gel 0.025% resulted in a greater reduction of acne lesions in patients with all skin types. Both the active ingredients are well tolerated, with no hyperpigmentation reported. Side effects experienced were like those previously reported for the individual ingredient.
