Flagyl 400 mg is a prescription medicine for the treatment of bacterial and protozoal infections. It contains the active ingredient Metronidazole, which belongs to the group of drugs known as antimicrobials. They may be used to treat bacterial infections of the brain, lung, blood, stomach lining, and pelvic area following delivery or in a wound following an operation. The anti-infective agent is useful in treating the following infections:
- genital infections in women caused by a parasite Trichomonas
- Urinary or genital infections caused by bacteria
- gum and teeth infections
- stomach ulcers caused by helicobacter pylori
- the disease giardiasis
- the parasitic disease amoebiasis
- or prevent infections occurring after operations.
Flagyl 400 mg is available in the form of a tablet that you need to swallow with a glass of water. Take it during or after a meal. Do not break or crush it. Your doctor will decide the dose that is best for you. Your doctor will tell you how many tablets to take and how often to use them. If you have any doubt, please ask your doctor. It is important to continue taking medicine for the time prescribed; otherwise, your infection could come back.
To prevent infections after surgery in adults and children over 12 years, 400 mg thrice daily is the recommended dose. For children under 12 years of age, your doctor will decide the child's dose depending on his/her body weight and the dose to be given 1 to 2 hours before surgery.
To treat anaerobic bacterial infections in adults and children over 12 years of age, 400 mg dose thrice daily is suggested.
To treat other infections such as infections of the sex organ, dental infections, diarrhea, and others, consult your doctor.
Do not take Flagyl tablets if you are allergic to them. Check with your doctor if you have liver problems, kidney disorders, disease of the nervous system, are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to conceive. Taking other medicines while receiving Metronidazole can increase the effects of either of the medicine. Check with your doctor before taking this anti-infective agent.
Stop taking medicine and immediately see your doctor if you develop swelling of the hands, face, lips, ankles, feet, throat, or tongue, which may cause difficulty in breathing and swallowing, itchy or lumpy rash. This may mean you are suffering from an allergic reaction. Side effects such as fever, stiff neck, hearing problems, vision issues, problems using your arms, legs, difficulty with speaking, and confusion may be the symptoms of a serious but rare disease (encephalopathy) affecting the brain.
