Eptoin 50 mg is a prescription antiepileptic drug used to control epilepsy. If you have this condition, you have repeated seizures. There is a different type of seizures, ranging from mild to severe. It contains the active ingredient Phenytoin, which treats tonic-clonic, complex partial seizures, and prevents and treats seizures during or brain surgery. The medicine belongs to a class of drugs known as anticonvulsants. All medications that belong to this drug class works similarly. They are believed to work by controlling brain chemicals that send signals to nerves so that seizures do not occur. Phenytoin is effective in preventing seizures from happening during or brain surgery. It can be used as a monotherapy or in conjunction with other medicines to treat your condition.
Your doctor will prescribe the best dose of Eptoin according to your condition that you need to take each day. The exact dose of medicine depends on various factors, including age, condition, and severity. When it comes to using Phenytoin tablet, follow all directions given by your doctor. If you do not understand the instructions given on your prescription, ask your doctor. Take the tablet during or immediately after a meal. This helps to prevent stomach upset.
Do not take Eptoin 50 mg if you are allergic to Phenytoin or any other medicine ingredients. Before you take this phenytoin formulation, you have had liver disease, porphyria, diabetes, depression, or suicidal thoughts. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to this anticonvulsant medication include shortness of breath, wheezing, rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other parts of the body. Also, let your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while receiving this anticonvulsant drug, the level of Phenytoin in your blood may decrease, causing your seizures to become worse. Your doctor may make dose adjustments according to your condition. The antiepileptic drug can pass into breast milk. You and your doctor will decide if you will take the medication or breastfeed. Inform your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Taking Eptoin tablet with certain other drugs can cause health complications or affect the mechanism of action of either medicine. Do not make changes in your dosing regimen without the consent of your doctor. Do not take phenytoin tablets if you have an allergy to methylphenobarbital or any other barbiturate medicines. Do not take this medicine if you are taking delavirdine, a medicine prescribed to treat HIV.
Tell your doctor as soon as possible if you do not feel better during the treatment. Eptoin 50 mg helps most people with seizures (fits), but it may have unwanted effects in a few people. But like all other medicines, Phenytoin can have side effects. Sometimes they are serious; most of the time, they are not and resolves after a few days. Tell your doctor if you develop headaches, sleepiness, difficulty speaking, nausea, constipation, aching joints, bleeding, sexual disturbances, and taste changes.
