Dicorate 1000 mg treats seizures, a medical condition caused by a burst of electrical activity in the brain. It contains the active ingredient Divalproex sodium, which reduces these abnormal electrical activities in the brain. The medicine is also effective for bipolar disorder, a condition where you have episodes of depression and periods of mania or hypomania. Your doctor may prescribe Divalproex as a mood stabilizer in patients with bipolar disorder. It keeps your mood within limits by helping to control the episodes of mania.
Take Dicorate ER 1000 mg as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription and read all the guidelines, including how and when to take medicine. Your doctor may change your dose as needed. Drink plenty of water while taking the tablet. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose if you do not get enough fluids each day. Swallow the tablet with water. You may need frequent blood tests during the treatment. If you need to undergo surgery, let your doctor know if you are using the Divalproex tablet. In general, the anti-convulsant drug should be taken with food. So, you can take the tablet with snacks or just after you had your meal. An extended-release or delayed-release tablet should be swallowed with a drink of water.
Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain medical conditions, and sometimes a medicine should be used with extra caution. Therefore, your doctor must know if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, having any kidney issues, liver disease, porphyria (a blood disorder), or taking any other medicines. This helps to check on your progress. You will need to have some blood tests regularly, particularly during the initial months of the treatment. While you are taking Dicorate extended-release tablets, there is a small risk that you may develop behavioural changes, thoughts of suicide. If you experience such mood changes, you must tell your doctor about it. You should not drink alcohol while you are receiving Divalproex sodium. The anti-convulsant drug should not be given to a woman who could become pregnant. This is because the medicine can cause harm to the unborn child. If you are already taking this anti-convulsant medication, you must avoid getting pregnant. Be sure to discuss the contraceptive measures that are suitable for you and your partner. If you are a woman and want to have a family, discuss with your doctor so that he/she can advise you about alternative treatment options before you conceive.
Along with useful effects, Dicorate ER 1000 mg can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Some unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but it is important to speak to a doctor if the side effects continue to bother you. Very common Divalproex side effects are nausea, stomach-ache, vomiting, diarrhea, sleepy, tiredness, headache, feeling shaky, increased appetite, thinning of hair, a problem with nails, uncontrolled muscle movements, and problems with liver changes.
