Cystran 5 mg is a prescription tablet for patients with overactive bladder. It helps reduce muscular spasms in the urinary bladder and tract. It contains the active ingredient Oxybutynin, used to treat symptoms of frequent urination, urgent urination, and nighttime leaks. It causes a significant reduction in both incontinent episodes and voluntary urination.Â
The suggested dose of this medicine for adults is 5mg two to three times daily. The maximum suggested dose is one 5 mg tablet four times daily. For elderly patients, the lower starting dose of 2.5 mg two to thrice daily is recommended. This medicine can be given along with the meal. The usual dose for pediatric patients over five years of age is one 5 mg tablet twice daily. The maximum suggested dose is one 5 mg three times per day. The dose must be changed per the patient's response to the medication, but only under the supervision of your doctor. Avoid sudden discontinuation of the treatment as it may worsen the condition.   Â
Cystran 5mg may not be suitable for everyone. You should not use it if you have difficulty urinating, passing, and digesting food. It is reported to contraindicate in the following cases in patients with heart disease, blockage/slowed movement of the stomach/intestines, active internal bleeding, glaucoma (narrow-angle), Hypertension (high blood pressure), muscle disease (myasthenia gravis), liver disease, heart problems (such as congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, and arrhythmias), stomach disorders (such as acid reflux, hiatal hernia, ulcerative colitis, intestinal atony), and kidney disease. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it may trigger side effects. Â
Always inform your doctor about all the medicines you are taking. Taking certain other medications with oxybutynin may affect how well they work and increase the risk of side effects. These include drugs for heart problems, certain antibiotics (clarithromycin and erythromycin), and fungal infections (itraconazole, miconazole, and ketoconazole).
You should also know that taking Oxybutynin at high environmental temperatures can cause fever and heat stroke due to decreased sweating. Â
Some commonly reported side effects of Cystran 5 mg are constipation, dry mouth, headache, and diarrhea. Developing such mild side effects does not mean you should stop taking the medicine. Talk to your doctor immediately if these side effects bother you or persist. Drinking plenty of water helps to reduce the risk of side effects. Oxybutynin may make you feel dizzy or sleepy or cause blurred vision, so avoiding driving or doing any activity that requires your complete attention is best.  Â
