Treatments for Hereditary Hair Loss

Hair loss due to the genetic factor is the most complex hair condition to treat. In most of such cases, people have no control over hair loss and the formation of hair pattern baldness, and within a few years, they lose a considerable number of hair strands. A usual hair loss treatment remains largely ineffective in such a condition. Most experts recommend three solutions for the hair loss prevention in such cases. These three solutions are minoxidil, finasteride, and surgery.

Minoxidil:

Approved by the FDA, Minoxidil is an effective drug to promote hair growth. It is an antihypertensive vasodilator medication that and is used externally. This hair fall treatment is a generic medication and is widely used to treat androgenic alopecia.

Minoxidil can stimulate new hair growth and prevent the incidence of hereditary balding. This drug is available for both men and women but in different strengths. The Rogaine Extra Strength 5% solution is suitable for men and 2% solution is recommended for women.

Men and women who use minoxidil can experience hair growth within 2 to 4 months. Men are advised to use the extra-strength version that proves to be much more effective than the regular-strength of minoxidil.

One should also note that it is rare to regain all the lost hair strands but one can find enough to hide baldness. This hair growth product proves to be more effective in the earlier stage of hair loss that later phase. Usually, the new hairs are comparatively thinner and lighter in color than normal ones. Users of minoxidil should complete its course otherwise new hair would fall within a few months.

People are also advised to consult a doctor before using minoxidil. If they are taking any other hair loss treatment or medicines, they should tell about the history and existing medical conditions to their health care provider. There are some possible side effects of minoxidil such as dryness and scalp irritation but they are minimal in effect.

Finasteride:

Finasteride is an oral medicine formulated to treat pattern baldness. It is also an FDA-approved drug available in pill form. Finasteride works by reducing the levels of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone in the body. This hormone is largely responsible for shrinking and falling of hair follicles. The formation of this hormone also happens due to genetic transition. Finasteride pills are prescribed for men, and women should not take this drug because of the serious side effects.

Experts have found that finasteride can help men regrow hair up to 60%. They have to use it continuously for several months to find back the lost hair strands. With regular application of finasteride, men can reverse the condition of pattern baldness. At present, this drug is rarely prescribed and not widely available as well because of its serious side effects. Moreover, the research on the effectiveness to treat hereditary baldness is still incomplete.

Surgery to grow hair:

Hair transplantation is another solution to hide pattern baldness. It is used to replace bald skin with fuller hairs. Experts take healthy hairs from the other parts of the skin and then plant them on the bald scalp. It requires several rounds of surgeries within a few months to treat baldness occurred due to heredity. Surgery is seen as a potential hair loss treatment that can be carried out precisely.

Hair transplantation is a bit expensive solution that takes a long time to maintain fuller hairs. Moreover, it is a painful experience for the patients. Chronic infection and the formation of scars are some other complications that patient may experience after the hair transplantation surgery.

Doctors performing hair surgery have to stretch the skin of bald area and then plant new hairs there. This method is not a perfect hair fall treatment but a procedure of new hair planting to reduce the bald area.
